Drama and Drivel

Last night I FINALLY finished Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Can I get a Hallelujah?! I probably should be writing about this over here, since reading these books is one of my 101 goals… but this is really a special case one-time review. I don’t want to start feeling like I have to write about each book as I read them, so I figure I can just cross-post. Hey, they’re my blogs, and I’ll organize them however the hell I want!

Soo…. this book was really hard to get into. The very first chapter gave me a good impression and I thought it was going to be a much easier read than Sense & Sensibility (which, in a way, it still was) – but that first chapter was misleading, and was directly followed by page after page of mindless chatter. It took incredibly long to get through the book because the first section (of the three sections the book is divided into) is so very tedious. Many nights I would fall asleep before finishing even a single complete chapter, and also having no idea what I’d just read. My eyes would follow the words across the page, but my mind was drifting from work, to my blog, to Christmas, to everything but what I was reading.

And then, finally! I hit the second section, and Elizabeth started to become real; she had opinions, she made mistakes, and she was incredibly stubborn. When I reached the third section suddenly all of the characters came to life! It amazed me to think that all this time these were the same people I’d been dreading spending time with! I found myself rooting for Mr. Darcy, despising Lady Catherine, sympathizing with Jane, and annoyed beyond belief with Lydia (that little twit).

So basically I definitely have to say I liked the book after all. I could only give it 3 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, though. I don’t like it when my books feel like homework, and it takes too much effort to get into the story in the first place to be granted any extra stars.
